Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counseling from an approved school counselor preparation program.
  • South Dakota School Counselor Certificate.
  • Previous experience in high school.
  • Constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; frequent repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers, scheduling, sitting, speaking, walking, talking, and writing are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create positive relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and work collaboratively with other teams.
  • This position requires a valid South Dakota certificate.
  • South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71 requires certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews. You will be required to provide your most recent certificate of completion prior to starting employment with the Sioux Falls School District.

Responsibilities

  • Provides counseling to individuals and small groups with personal concerns.
  • Consults with teachers, staff, parents, and other significant stakeholders regarding the developmental needs of students.
  • Participates in building problem-solving team meetings and supports a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTMDSS) model for delivering academic and social emotional information.
  • Counsels students through the development of postsecondary and career plans.
  • Monitors and effectively communicates with parents about student progress.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of students and their families.
  • Refers students with significant challenges to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.
  • Coordinates registration.
  • Plans, evaluates, and revises the building counseling program.
  • Coordinates and conducts activities which contribute to the implementation of the high school counseling plan.
  • Builds interpersonal relationships and establishes positive rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents.
  • Pursues professional growth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
