About The Position

Riverbend High School seeks a creative and student-centered Art Teacher to provide high-quality classroom instruction in visual arts. The successful candidate will design and deliver engaging lessons that develop students’ artistic skills, creativity, and critical thinking through a variety of media and techniques. This position may include teaching multiple levels of studio art , from introductory courses to advanced classes. Preference will be given to candidates capable of teaching AP Art and Design courses and supporting students in developing strong portfolios.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate Virginia teaching license with Art endorsement as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the School Board.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of visual arts instruction and studio art techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching high school studio art courses across multiple levels .
  • Experience teaching or supporting AP Art and Design (2D Art & Design, 3D Art & Design, or Drawing) .
  • Experience developing student portfolios and organizing art exhibitions.
  • Prior teaching experience within a public school system.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and delivers engaging daily instruction in visual arts , including courses such as Studio Art and other art courses as assigned.
  • Teaches students a variety of artistic techniques, media, and creative processes including drawing, painting, design, and mixed media.
  • Develops lessons aligned with the Virginia Visual Arts Standards of Learning and division curriculum guidelines.
  • Prepares for assigned classes and maintains evidence of lesson preparation upon request of building administrators.
  • Encourages students to develop creativity, artistic expression, and technical skills while exploring historical and contemporary art concepts.
  • Provides instruction in visual analysis, artistic critique, and reflection to support student growth.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and varying levels of artistic experience.
  • Evaluates student progress through a variety of assessments including projects, portfolios, critiques, and written reflections.
  • Maintains accurate records of student progress and provides constructive feedback to support artistic development.
  • Creates a classroom environment that encourages experimentation, creativity, and respect for artistic expression.
  • Maintains art supplies, equipment, and classroom materials in a safe and organized manner.
  • Organizes and supports student exhibitions, art displays, and school or community showcases of student work.
  • Supports recruitment, retention, and continued participation of students in the visual arts program.
  • Works collaboratively with the fine arts department and school staff to support interdisciplinary learning and school events.
  • Supports students preparing portfolios for advanced coursework, AP Art and Design, and post-secondary opportunities when applicable.
  • Participates in collaborative planning, professional learning communities, and department initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
