About The Position

KBR (Kord Technologies, LLC) is seeking an experienced High Energy Laser (HEL) Systems Engineer to support the development and deployment of next-generation directed energy solutions. We are at the forefront of advancing high energy laser technologies to provide critical capabilities to the Warfighter in defense of national security interests. Our HEL programs focus on rigorous research, rapid prototyping, and system integration to deliver effective, resilient laser systems tailored to modern and emerging threats. We work closely with Department of Defense agencies and industry partners to push the boundaries of what is technically possible in the directed energy domain. As a High Energy Laser Systems Engineer, you will be instrumental in the design, integration, and fielding of advanced HEL systems. This role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver innovative directed energy technologies that meet mission requirements. The successful candidate will possess strong technical expertise in laser systems, systems integration, and defense-related development, with the ability to support complex programs from concept through testing and deployment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in laser system design, development, and integration.
  • Strong background in laser physics, optical engineering, and systems engineering principles.
  • Experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving, technical writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with defense applications of directed energy or HEL systems.
  • Familiarity with military standards, test protocols, and system qualification processes.
  • Proficiency in optical modeling and simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, FRED, Code V).
  • Experience with power and thermal management systems for high power lasers.
  • Active DoD security clearance (Secret or higher).

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate high energy laser systems and subsystems.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams including optics, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering.
  • Develop and maintain system-level requirements, interface documents, design specifications, and test plans.
  • Support technical reviews and provide clear communication to internal teams, partners, and government stakeholders.
  • Identify, track, and mitigate technical risks across the program lifecycle.
  • Contribute to test planning, system validation, and data analysis from lab and field events.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge sharing within the technical team.
  • Stay current with trends and advancements in HEL, directed energy, and related defense technologies.
  • Support proposal efforts and technical solution development for new business pursuits.
