About The Position

This position is responsible for providing targeted, high-dosage literacy support to elementary students to strengthen foundational reading skills. The High-Dosage Literacy Tutor works in small groups or one-on-one settings and exercises independent judgment in implementing instructional strategies aligned with established literacy practices. This is a temporary position of approximately 10 weeks, requiring a commitment of 1–4 hours per day, at least three days per week. Paid training will be provided for one full day prior to the start of work. The position is supervised by the building principal. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent from two-year College or technical school or at least one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, IFSPs, lesson plans, data, memos, e-mails, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute and apply rate, ratio, and percent to practical situations.
  • Ability to draw and interpret a variety of graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail, internet software, word processing software, and computer programs used by the District.
  • Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, and members of the community.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment to meet timelines and work in a dynamic environment.
  • Certificates as determined by the District.
  • Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card, bloodborne pathogen training, and blood spill training.
  • All staff must complete annual staff training on Child Abuse Identification and Prevention in Oregon Schools; Sexual Misconduct – Staff-to-Student; and Bullying Prevention in Oregon Schools.
  • Trainings in Coaching Fundamentals, Concussion Management, and Steroid Education are also required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior successful experience working in a school setting or with young children strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience as a tutor, instructional assistant, or interventionist
  • Coursework or training in education, reading, or child development
  • Experience using literacy assessment tools and progress monitoring data
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students' literacy growth.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Experience working with elementary-age students, preferably in early literacy or reading intervention settings
  • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices aligned to the science of reading (e.g., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
  • Ability to provide high-dosage, small-group or one-on-one literacy tutoring with consistency and fidelity to district-selected instructional materials
  • Ability to follow structured lesson plans and implement progress monitoring as directed
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with classroom teachers, literacy specialists, and school staff
  • Commitment to supporting equitable outcomes for students and working with diverse learners, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities
  • Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with students to promote engagement and confidence in reading
  • Willingness to participate in required training and ongoing coaching provided through Oregon Early Literacy Grant funding
  • Reliable attendance and ability to maintain consistent tutoring schedules over the duration of the program
  • Successful completion of required background checks and district onboarding requirements
  • Demonstrates regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all relevant Board policies, administrative regulations, and building rules.
  • Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  • Attends required staff meetings.
  • Attends in-service and workshop trainings; applying training to extra duty responsibilities.
  • Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours, as required.
  • Completes appropriate logs, forms, and paperwork, as required.
  • Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  • Reports issues to authorities as necessary, animal control, suspicious activity, etc.
  • Maintains a safe environment at all times.
