About The Position

High Adventure & Ropes Course Instructor – Summer Camp Girl Scouts of Utah is hiring a seasonal High Adventure & Ropes Course Instructor for our Summer Camp Programs at Camp Cloud Rim and Trefoil Ranch. ABOUT WORKING AT GSU’S SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS This position plays a key role in upholding the mission of Girl Scouts of Utah by modeling respect, integrity, and service, prioritizing camper well-being, and contributing to a collaborative, camp-wide culture. When not leading high adventure or ropes course activities, this position supports general camp operations, demonstrating flexibility, teamwork, and a readiness to assist wherever needed to provide a memorable and meaningful camp experience for all. The High Adventure & Ropes Course Instructor will primarily support high adventure programming at Camp Cloud Rim in Park City, including rock climbing, hiking, and backpacking activities. There are additional positions at Trefoil Ranch in Provo Canyon who will assist with ropes course instruction on the high and low ropes, archery, hatchet throwing, and some art activities.

Requirements

  • Must be a certified driver on the council’s behalf, including a clear motor vehicle record, being at least 21 years of age, and providing proof of auto insurance and a valid driver’s license.
  • Have completed certification or documented training from a recognized organization or certifying body for rock climbing, ropes courses, or equivalent documented experience.
  • Have experience participating in and leading backpacking and hiking trips.
  • Hold or be willing to obtain Red Cross First Aid & CPR Certifications or the equivalent.
  • Possess strong organizational, leadership, teaching, and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Pass a criminal background check, including sex offender registries and driving records.
  • Hold or obtain Red Cross First Aid & CPR Certifications or the equivalent.
  • Hold or obtain a Utah Food Handlers Permit.
  • Complete Youth Protection Training within the first week of employment.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups of campers ages 6–17 and provide necessary verbal instruction.
  • Ability to follow directions from Team Leaders and adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Understand and implement safety guidelines and standards as outlined by Girl Scouts of the USA, the American Camp Association, and any state and local codes.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to respond in a crisis situation.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Girl Scouts of Utah.
  • Service-oriented team player able to work in an inclusive manner with staff, volunteers, and campers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to bend, move, lift, stock, and carry boxes, program materials, and supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and work on your feet up to 8 hours a day and upwards of 10,000 steps a day on uneven, unpaved, and steep terrain.
  • Ability to live and work in a high-elevation outdoor setting of up to 9,200 feet in varying and extreme weather conditions.
  • Have the visual and auditory ability to respond to environmental and other hazards related to summer camp activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience facilitating high ropes, low ropes, archery, or challenge course activities preferred.
  • Wilderness First Aid or higher certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and manage quality rock climbing, hiking, and backpacking programs for campers.
  • Manage health and safety conditions in climbing and high adventure areas.
  • Work with Program Coordinators to plan and provide progressive archery, high and low ropes challenge courses, and hatchet throwing programs.
  • Assist with art programming and other specialty activities as needed.
  • When not teaching and leading high adventure or ropes course programs, assist unit counselors under the direction of Head Counselors to provide quality Girl Scout programming to campers.
  • Assist with general camp operations and camp-wide activities.
  • Understand and implement safety guidelines and standards as outlined by Girl Scouts of the USA, the American Camp Association, and any state and local codes.
  • Job duties may be subject to change pursuant to camp activities, camp needs, and the organization as a whole.
