About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy and/or Staff Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will assist the pharmacist with prescription management and communication with prescribers regarding patient medications. This includes, but is not limited to, filling prescriptions, billing of prescriptions to third parties, collection of payments from patients, maintaining drug inventory, equipment, and records. The Pharmacy Technician will assist patients over the phone and in person to address customer service concerns and questions about medications. The Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for confirming patient information on prescription labels prior to disbursing medications. The Pharmacy Technician will also work with patients, prescribers, and other members of the healthcare team to provide patients with appropriate and beneficial pharmacy services to meet the needs of Highland Health Providers patients while adhering to federal, state, and local regulations.

Requirements

  • Education – Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Certification as a Pharmacy Technician in accordance with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Plus, a combination of training and work experience that indicate possession of skills, knowledge, and abilities required for position.
  • Experience– Required: Minimum of one (1) years of experience in a position as a certified technician in retail or medical setting. Valid Ohio Driver’s License required.
  • Competencies Required: The Pharmacy Technician must read and interpret physician orders; prepare pharmaceuticals for dispensing; operate equipment necessary for compounding, preparing, labeling, and dispensing drugs; document activities, interventions, and processes; and communicate drug-related information to patients, physicians, nurses, and other members of the medical community verbally and in writing. This technician must have a basic working knowledge of pharmacy abbreviations and calculations, drug names and strengths, and possess knowledge of the operation of equipment including the printer, computer, scanner, and labeling machine. The position requires successful completion of a background check including (but not limited to) education, employment, driving, credit, and criminal history records.
  • Physical Demands: M This job operates in a health care setting. This position requires frequent standing and walking to storage shelves and filling counters to fill prescriptions.
  • Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use two hands, talk and hear.
  • The position requires corrected vision and the ability to see distinctions in colors and shapes.
  • This position is moderately active and requires standing and walking for the duration of the shift.
  • Pharmacy Technician must be able to obtain drugs from storage areas between floors and approximately six feet above floor level; transport medication carts, orders, and other items (weighing up to 50 pounds) to various areas of the pharmacy.
  • The position requires the successful completion of a medical examination after offer of hire has been made. The position requires the employee to be free of all unlawful substances and alcohol.
  • The position requires successful completion of a background check including (but not limited to) education, employment, driving, credit, and criminal history records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data entry including patient information, prescription information, prescriber information, and insurance adjudication
  • Retrieve medication from inventory and place into appropriate containers
  • Assist in inventory management including ordering, inventory returns, restocking shelves (with proper rotation of items), and managing outdated medications
  • Assist in maintaining a clear, safe, and orderly work environment by restocking bottle and lid bins and taking the trash out daily
  • Answer telephone calls from patients and route, as needed, to appropriate staff to address each question and concern in a timely and efficient manner
  • Assist patients at prescription drop off and pick up areas and disburse completed and confirmed prescriptions to patients
  • Process payments for prescriptions and accurately reconcile all payments for prescriptions and miscellaneous merchandise daily
  • Assist in contacting patients regarding Medication Therapy Management appointments or other patient care initiatives
  • Removes all outdated medication monthly and assists in organizing return shipments to wholesalers
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the profession and is current on all licensure requirements and continuing education
  • Ensure that the quality of professional services is always maintained when assisting with pharmacy services
  • Assist the pharmacy staff with preparation of delivery orders as well as delivering the medications as needed
  • Adheres to Highland Health Providers Corp. philosophy, policies, procedures and supports its goals
  • Complies with standards set forth by Highland Health Providers Corp. and other regulatory bodies
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Pharmacy, site manager, and prescribers to offer continual support and performance improvement for the clinical pharmacy and dispensing pharmacy staff
  • Assist the pharmacist in training new staff and coordinating technician schedules (if applicable)
  • Works with Director of Pharmacy, CFO, site manager, and finance staff to ensure that all payments received (cash, checks, etc.) are accurately accounted for and submitted to the finance department
  • Assist the pharmacist in maintaining daily, monthly, and yearly management reports
  • Serves on committees as needed or directed by the Director of Pharmacy, CMO, or other administrators
  • Works closely with staff to maximize 340B benefit to patients and Highland Health Providers Corp. while maintaining compliance with 340B regulations
  • Maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, clients and vendors while ensuring confidentiality
  • Follow safety rules and protocols as established by Highland Health Providers Corp. and immediately report any workplace injury or medication error to supervisor
  • Presents professional appearance, practices personal hygiene in accordance with policy
