About The Position

Clinical Care Responsibilities: Clinical practice with 90% effort focused on direct patient care in the practice of hepatology and gastroenterology. Clinical practice will be concentrated on diagnosis, monitoring, management and endoscopic procedures on patients with or being evaluated for clinical problems related to the liver. It will consist of 7 half-day sessions per week (5 half-days of outpatient clinic per week, one of which may be fellow’s clinic or gastroenterology focused clinic) and 2 half days of endoscopy per week (particularly patients needing screening for or management of esophageal varices but also general gastrointestinal upper and lower endoscopy including screening colonoscopies). 10 to 12 weeks of inpatient hepatology service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick per year (20% effort). During the RWJUH inpatient service, 2 half-days of endoscopy or outpatient clinics will be performed in the AM). Note that for candidates who are trained in liver transplantation, there will be an option of 20% effort at University Hospital, Newark on the liver transplant services. This will consist of 5 full weeks of inpatient care (i.e. including weekend duties) (10% effort), one half-day of clinic per month and weekly attendance (by Zoom or in person) on the weekly afternoon liver transplantation conference (10% effort). Establish and maintain physician office hours in order to be accessible to new consults and follow up patients, adjusting as needed at designated GI offices. Be accountable for overall care of patients who are consulted or admitted (inpatient and same day procedure) under Physician’s name. Provide complete and timely consults as requested by other specialists. Provide clear instructions, explanations, and options available regarding diagnosis, treatment, medications, and follow-up to patients, family members, and other health care team members. Provide GI night and weekend on-call coverage during inpatient service (estimated at 2 nights per Monday – Thursday weekdays and 50% of weekends while on inpatient service and otherwise as is necessary to cover clinical needs. Attend monthly meetings with key personnel to review data, outcomes, protocols, policies, procedures, and staffing to continuously monitor and improve the care rendered. Attend departmental physician staff meetings, M&M Conference, liver masses/tumor board meetings, fellowship selection committee, and other departmental meetings deemed appropriate by the Division Chief or the Department of Medicine Chair Identify opportunities to participate in research trials and publications Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times. Limit work/patient related discussions to private areas. Complete required medical documentation included in patients charts in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws. Provide accurate and complete information required for billing Submit clinical charges and patient notes in timely manner. Effectively communicate with patients, family members, and other health care team members. Academic Responsibilities at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Supervise and teach fellows, residents and housestaff, and medical students. Perform clinical or translational research or quality improvement and academic program building in areas of interest, preferably related to liver diseases. Pursue leadership activities in medical societies and associations, particularly in leading gastroenterology, endoscopy and internal medicine societies. Participate in or develop CME programs, especially as related to gastrointestinal and biliary malignancies, advanced endoscopy or other clinical areas of expertise. Participate in the academic activities of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division as well as the educational, patient care, research/quality improvement and other activities of the Department of Medicine. Attend Division and Department meetings including but not limited to faculty meetings, Grand Rounds and Fellow recruitment sessions. Participate in appropriate Department of Medicine and Medical School committees. Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Chief and/or Department Chair.
