About The Position

This position serves as a chief or head of an epidemiology program unit within
an Office and is responsible for overall management and supervision of the
program and assigned personnel. As a Management Senior Scientist/Epidemiologist,
performs supervisory and advanced professional analytical work in surveillance,
detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries. Oversees and conducts
advanced-level professional epidemiologic work. Supervises and directs the work
activities of subordinate staff involved in epidemiological investigations;
develops disease identification, surveillance and control systems; maintains
ongoing disease reporting systems; provides technical advice and assistance to
local health departments, healthcare partners and the public. Reviews and
conducts literature reviews and data analyses. Develops and evaluates methods of
training for health care providers and staff. Reviews work products or
achievements of subordinate workers; evaluates work and formulates plans for
improvements. Formulates policies, procedures. Develops and provides scientific
and clinical advice and technical assistance to communities and outside partners
with respect to surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation.
Participates in after-hours activities including partner meetings,
investigation, outbreak and emergency response as needed. Participates in
writing grants and other funding proposals.

Requirements

• Considerable independent judgment and advanced knowledge of applied epidemiology for public health practice.
• Managerial techniques and personnel policies and procedures.
• Contemporary principles and practices of epidemiology.
• Principles and practices applicable to the control and prevention of diseases.
• Methods, procedures and techniques used in developing, implementing, and maintaining disease surveillance and control programs.
• Contemporary medical methods and practices used in the control of a variety of diseases.
• Program planning and fiscal monitoring practices and procedures.
• Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.
• Working management and work leadership.

• Interpersonal relations, as applied to contracts with representatives of other governmental and private organizations, physicians, and the public.
• Conducting scientific studies and investigations required to identify and isolate various diseases.
• Supervision, program planning and administration, contract/budget monitoring, and grant writing.
• Public health surveillance, computerized database management, data analysis, program evaluation, literature search, effective verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

• Masters of public health in Epidemiology and two years of professional experience in public health agency. One year of management/supervisory duties.
• Ideal candidate will have experience using statistical software, working with the different levels of US health care system and public health system, and working with electronic public health surveillance databases.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, manage, and supervise the work of epidemiologists and associated staff conducting health surveillance and investigations. Plans, assigns, schedules, prioritizes, directs and coordinates the work of assigned epidemiologists, research analysts, and other staff.
• Plans, directs, oversees, and manages epidemiologic studies and/or urgent outbreak investigations. Leads the development and conduct of epidemiologic studies for program planning.
• Oversees the design and use of databases and the design and management of surveillance systems.
• Develops and evaluates methods of training for health care providers and staff.
• Develops and provides scientific and clinical advice and technical assistance to communities and outside partners with respect to surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation.
