The Hemodialysis Technician plays a crucial role in providing assistance to nursing staff in delivering specific treatments and basic nursing care to patients undergoing renal dialysis. This position is responsible for both direct and indirect patient care, following physician and nursing orders to ensure the highest standards of care tailored to the age and developmental needs of patients. The technician will set up and operate the hemodialysis machine under the supervision of licensed personnel, ensuring that all procedures are conducted safely and effectively. In this role, the technician will participate in the nursing process by providing direct care to renal/dialysis patients, which includes comfort measures, personal care, and treatments. They will also assist in collecting data related to patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and pre and post-operative care, all while anticipating the needs of renal patients. Ensuring quality patient care is paramount, which involves following the established plan of care and maintaining accurate and timely communication regarding patient information. The technician will evaluate patients prior to dialysis, identifying any risks for instability and promptly advising the nurse. They are responsible for setting up the dialysis machine according to each patient's prescription and monitoring the treatment process to ensure patient stability and proper equipment function. Maintenance of dialysis equipment is also a key responsibility, including cleaning and checking the equipment according to established specifications. Effective communication with the healthcare team, patients, and their families is essential, as is taking personal responsibility for the care provided to assigned patients. The technician must also adhere to age and developmental care guidelines appropriate for the patient population served.
