About The Position

The Hematology Supervisor provides direction, oversight and guidance for the activities in highly complex Hematology Department within the Great Falls Hospital. With minimal direct supervision, the Hematology Department supervisor performs, coordinates and controls the daily technical functions necessary for efficient and effective operations. This includes creating and reviewing departmental procedures, monitoring daily quality control, training staff technologists, maintaining instrument functionality, instrument calibration, evaluation and implementation of new instrumentation and procedures as set forth by the Laboratory and Accrediting agencies. Advanced knowledge regarding normal and abnormal clinical Hematology results is required for accurate review and reporting of patient results. This position requires the ability to analyze data and accurately formulate effective approaches to resolve problems on an ongoing basis. Using a team approach with Laboratory Manager and/or Assistant Manager, performs and implements annual employee evaluations for testing staff members assigned to the Hematology Department and provides guidance for improvement as required. The Hematology Department supervisor will act as a resource person to Laboratory technologists and providers, in lieu of a staff Clinical Pathologist, to aid in areas of Clinical Hematology when unusual results are obtained Receives direction from: Laboratory Manager. Gives direction to: Medical Technologist.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree from an accredited college or university as a Medical Laboratory Technician with successful completion of clinical internship (NAACLS accredited or equivalent), required.
  • Five (5) years experience as a registered technologist or technician in an accredited laboratory that is highly complex, required.
  • MLT (ASCP) or other nationally recognized registry.
  • Current Montana State CLS Certification.
  • Advanced knowledge of Hematology department laboratory procedures and operations including automated and manual methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge regarding use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical significance of patient Hematology results.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
  • Knowledge of safety and infection control regulations and policies.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to organize workload to obtain quality results with optimum Productivity.
  • Ability to delegate appropriate tasks and work assignments to appropriate staff members.
  • Ability to evaluate patient and control results for trends, shifts and other significant changes and take proactive measures to assure quality laboratory testing.
  • Ability to analyze data quickly and accurately and to formulate effective approaches to resolve problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other technical and non- technical staff members, physicians, nursing staff, and entities outside of the Great Falls Clinic in oral and written formats.
  • Ability to evaluate performance of those technologists assigned to department with concurrence of the laboratory manager or assistant manager, make recommendations for performance improvements and implement these changes.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
