About The Position

The Pipe Department Helper at Gulf Marine Repair Corporation is responsible for assisting Pipe Welders and Pipe Fitters in the shipyard. This role involves layout, installation, and assembly of pipe components, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations. The helper will also perform various tasks to support the pipe department's daily operations, including running errands and maintaining a clean work environment.

Requirements

  • Communication Skills - Comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to understand information, ideas, direction and perform the task or project discussed.

  • Ability to learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including steel inventories.

  • Ability to sit, climb and balance.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or push or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or push or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work up to a 12-hour shift in all weather and temperature extremes.
  • Vision adequate to perform all required tasks.
  • Ability to move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with age.

Nice To Haves

  • Education - High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate).
  • Experience - Six months experience in industrial construction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Pipe Department workers in laying out work.
  • Learn to perform layout independently.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Follow established jobsite safety and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area.
  • Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to minimize them.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish Pipe Welders and Pipe Fitters with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary.
  • Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing of materials and workpieces during installation.
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to assist pipe department personnel.
  • Perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft workers.
