About The Position

Description Helper – Distribution Line Construction The helper classification is an entry-level position on a Distribution line crew. On-the-job experiences and training will be provided to successful candidates to equip them with the knowledge and skills required for progression within the helper classification. A candidate must demonstrate satisfactory progression as a helper in order to be considered for an apprentice lineman position. Successful candidates for a helper position must reside or be willing to relocate at their own expense to live within 30 minutes of the assigned headquarters. Position will be filled as a Helper, depending on the qualifications, experience and skills of the successful candidate. This position will report to the Hattiesburg location. This position will be covered by the Memorandum of Agreement between Mississippi Power and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Job Summary This position will be filled as a Helper in Distribution Line Construction, depending on the applicant’s qualifications. This position is responsible for working in a line crew on overhead and underground construction and maintenance of distribution systems. This position is responsible for responding to and assisting in correcting problems with the electrical distribution system during normal working hours, after hours, nights, weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Must pass or have passed the Construction and Skills Trade Test (CAST) in order to be considered
  • Must currently have or possess the ability to obtain a valid Mississippi Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of employment
  • Must maintain weight to comply with equipment manufacturer's restrictions
  • Must be available for call out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and overnight travel as needed
  • Availability for timely response to call outs is required
  • The successful applicant must currently live within or be willing to relocate to within a 30-minute commute from the assigned headquarters office. No relocation assistance is available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and transferable skills in a related field of construction, trades, etc. is a plus
  • Completion of a line worker training program is highly desired
  • Candidates should have knowledge of customer relation skills and the ability to think clearly and make logical decisions under pressure
  • Average or above average computer skills are desired
  • Basic knowledge of electricity and the maintenance of electrical lines is desired
  • Once trained, must have ability to operate machinery and vehicles, use basic hand tools, work at heights, climb tall structures, read blueprints, lift, carry and pull heavy objects
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and work in enclosed, dark areas
  • Work methods must adhere to all safe work practices and must possess the ability to build solid interpersonal relationships with other employees

Responsibilities

  • Candidate must safely perform any work normally or reasonably required in this classification.
  • This position assists others to build, maintain, inspect, trouble-shoot, replace, and repair distribution power lines, poles, and related equipment according to Company specifications and manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Successful candidate will participate in reviewing work orders and determining material needed to complete jobs; along with being able to safely load wire coils, poles, equipment, and materials onto trucks.
  • Candidate is responsible for using hand tools to assemble materials, connectors, brackets, and other equipment in preparation for installation on pole-lines or underground systems.
  • This position periodically works aerially from a ladder, and may use pole-climbing tools.
  • Successful candidate must be able to climb utility poles and other structures once trained.
  • This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining tools and trucks for their crew.
  • Successful candidate must maintain regular attendance and comply with all safety procedures, practices and requirements.
  • Candidate must be able to effectively communicate in person, by radio, and by phone to various company personnel in the normal course of duties.
  • Dig holes and trenches for setting poles, installing and repairing cables with manual tools (i.e. shovels, post hole diggers)
  • Assemble pole hardware using hand tools
  • Frame poles (prior to setting)
  • Install grounding conductors on poles
  • Properly set up trucks (chocks, outriggers, etc.)
  • Stock trucks with tools and minor materials
  • Participate in after-hours restoration
  • Participate in callout rotation
  • Properly set up and use ladders
  • Carry and transport rolls of wire and cable
  • Hoist material via proper use of a handline
  • Material rigging (including use of appropriate knot tying)
  • Practice good housekeeping on jobsites and in equipment
  • Use hoist to properly tension guy wires
  • Limited pole climbing
  • Drive/transport bucket and derrick trucks
