About The Position

Performs semi-skilled work in lubricating and servicing heavy construction equipment, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other mechanical equipment; picks up and delivers parts and supplies to the shop.

Requirements

  • High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with coursework in auto mechanics.
  • One years’ experience in heavy construction equipment maintenance.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
  • Valid Class B Driver’s License with Hazmat endorsement and a satisfac­tory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Knowledge of geography of the County, including major streets and landmarks.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in use of hand tools.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.

Responsibilities

  • Operates Service Truck to pick up and deliver equipment parts, tires and other supplies.
  • Operates County fuel truck to refuel dozers and heavy equipment at Landfill, Recycling, emergency generators at various sites, and support at other departments as requested. Provides associated fuel receipts and issuance logs/records to office staff for tracking and documentation purposes.
  • Assists mechanics with manual and semi-skilled tasks in in repairing and maintaining automotive equipment, compactor site equipment and heavy machinery. To include greasing and lubricating, changing oil and filters, changing air filters and tires, checking and filling transmission and brake fluid.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of the baler and equipment associated with recycling center operations.
  • Performs welding up to and including repair and fabrication of containers and compactors up to and including on-site repairs as needed.
  • Ensures equipment is running properly; starts and tests operation of equipment; makes minor adjustments as required.
  • Maintains records of individual machines and charts services performed.
  • Maintains and cleans shop area daily, including floors and fluid containment area.
  • Maintains safety guards around shop machinery and lube pit.
  • Ensures shop and related buildings are locked and the alarms are set at the end of the day.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
