About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator position within the Department of Transportation is responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways. This role involves operating heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, and snow removal equipment. The operator will also perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities, repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks, and provide traffic control assistance. Additional responsibilities include applying herbicide to control weeds, removing debris, and ensuring the safe operation of equipment under close supervision.

Requirements

  • Level I: No education and experience requirements.
  • Level II: One year of experience in operating heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, and snow removal equipment.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repairs failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
  • Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag.
  • Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and unwanted vegetation.
  • Removes debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.
