About The Position

SC Steel, LLC was established January 2, 2018, as a subsidiary of FabSouth and acquired the assets of SMI-Owen Steel Company, Inc. on April 1, 2018. SMI-Owen Steel Company had owned the business since 1994 when they acquired it from South Carolina Steel Company. The Upstate South Carolina facility has been in operation at this location since 1952. Moves and loads trailers to support structural steel fabrication and shipments, inspecting trailers for road-worthiness and conducts minor trailer maintenance and repair. This position additionally assists with laydown yard organization and operating heavy material handling equipment.

Requirements

  • Understands the DOT regulations concerning strapping of loads, distribution of loaded weights, oversize load thresholds and requirements.
  • Understands proper loading techniques and proper use of dunnage to separate loads and to prevent damage to pieces during transit.
  • Understands basic maintenance for spotter truck and related equipment.
  • Certification for inspecting and performing adjustments to trailer brakes
  • Time Management skills
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to deal with various people with patience, ability to handle multiple and sometimes conflicting requests in a professional and efficient manner.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have Commercial Drivers License (CDL Class A)
  • Three or more years of related activities, including material handling and forklift training

  • Communication – Interface with multiple resources Logistics Manager, fabrication supervisors and painter/loaders

Responsibilities

  • Move trailers from yard to fabrication shops or other locations as directed
  • Inspect loaded trailers to ensure loading is sound (will not create safety issues and will not distort materials during transit).
  • Keep trailer yard organized and assist with truck loads
  • Communicate with maintenance regarding trailer maintenance needs
  • Perform basic inspections of trailers prior to pulling them into fabrication shops for loading:
  • Inspect Tires & perform tire pressure checks
  • Inspect for defects
  • Replace bulbs, glad hands, and various minor trailer maintenance
  • Maintain all documentation needed for DOT compliance
  • Tractor Driver’s Log
  • Trailer Inspection documentation
