U.S. Law requires all applicants to furnish proof of identity and right to work in the U.S. This position is responsible for driving an automated truck, front-end loader, boom truck and other heavy equipment in the collection, transfer, and disposal of solid waste.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
  • Knowledge of solid waste collection procedures and routes.
  • Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance techniques for vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in operating a front-end loader, rear packer, tractor trailer, automated truck, recycling truck, or boom truck.
  • Skill in safe and defensive driving techniques.
  • Skill in oral communication.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a front-end loader, rear packer, tractor trailer, automated truck, recycling truck, or boom truck.
  • Operates a solid waste transfer station.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment (i.e., greasing, checking air pressure, oil and other fluids) and informs appropriate personnel of necessary major repairs.
  • Assists other departments as required.
  • Weighs trucks before and after collection activities.
  • Performs the work of Solid Waste Supervisor in his or her absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
