About The Position

Under general supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, employee is responsible for the collection and transportation of solid waste collected from assigned routes within the areas of the City of Weslaco; with the use of heavy equipment such as a side/front-end and/or Rolloff Truck, in connection with the City's Trash Pick-up Program. Performs routine maintenance on equipment before operating such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties. May work extended hours on weekdays and/or on weekends depending on workload. Essential Job Functions Operates heavy equipment to transport large quantities of solid refuse collected throughout assigned trash pickup route to ensure safe and clean residential and commercial areas free from garbage. Travels to and from the landfill to dispose of waste materials. Maintains records of work performed for supervisor such as vehicle check list and repair reports. Report unusual sanitation issues such as disposal of unacceptable items, illegal dumping, etc. Maintains and inspects assigned vehicle and performs safety checks daily to include washing assigned sanitation truck. Attends training sessions as required to maintain abreast of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements. Attendance, physically present to work. Required to respond to emergency situations as necessary. Performs other similar or related duties as assigned. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends. Must be able to operate equipment safely and efficiently. Perform job functions with attention to proper safety of other workers, buildings, power lines, poles, valves, and city policies and procedures as related to the job duties. Minimum Qualifications & Requirements High school diploma or equivalent GED. Applicant must have a current valid CDL Class "A" or "B" driver license and be insurable. Ten (10) years of verifiable experience. Applicant must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen at City's expense. Knowledge of geography of the City of Weslaco streets. Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months upon hire. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred. Skills and Abilities Details Knowledge of safe and effective operation of equipment and machinery; working knowledge of brush collection division operations. Working knowledge of the location of city streets. Ability to utilize and comprehend maps depicting city streets and blocks, pay careful attention to details, and perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of time. Ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are taken to ensure employee safety. Working Conditions/Physical Demands Employee constantly performs work outdoors and is exposed to equipment/machinery, noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease, and risk of personal injury. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at nights and/or on weekends in response to emergency situations. Employee must have the ability to make good judgment when making decisions regarding their regular job duties and be able to have the following mental functions: reading, simple math calculations, and withstanding moderate amounts of stress.
