About The Position

Harris County Flood Control District is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Heavy Equipment Operator II. Reporting to the Maintenance Construction Field Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Operator II is responsible for operating various pieces of medium and small sized construction equipment, small engines, attachments, power tools and hand tools to construct, repair, and perform maintenance to channels and bayous within Harris County.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Three (3) years' experience operating small sized equipment.
  • Two (2) years' experience operating medium sized equipment.
  • One (1) year of experience driving dump trucks and or rollbacks.
  • Valid Class "B" Texas Driver's License.
  • Must have or obtain a Forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Good verbal & written communication skills. Can effectively communicate with coworkers and the public.
  • Must be able to read and understand written instructions, maps, and be able to provide directions to District locations.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to work well with a team in a field environment.
  • Can work independently with limited to no supervision.
  • Knowledge of bayou and drainage area maintenance.
  • Knowledge of construction standards, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office (Outlook, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat Professional).

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-lingual skills in English/Spanish (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Construct forms, place rebar, pour and finish concrete structures such as culverts, inlets, and manholes.
  • Operate medium and small-sized construction equipment such as excavators, skid o steers, and other machinery for channel and bayou maintenance.
  • Build and repair manholes, inlets, and stormwater infrastructure components.
  • Install corrugated metal pipe outfalls, signage, gates, and bollards.
  • Perform minor erosion control repairs and grading operations on open channels and drainage facilities.
  • Perform sediment removal operations using excavators, including operations on slopes.
  • Clear debris, trees, rocks, and other large obstacles from right-of-way and channel bottoms.
  • Remove selective vegetation and perform de-snagging operations on channels.
  • Flag traffic and act as a spotter for other equipment operators during the ingress and egress of work sites.
  • Inspect County vehicles and equipment for safety.
  • May perform other duties that can be added or changed as the course and scope of the job directs.
