Job Summary The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs and maintenance services on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment to maintain equipment in operational readiness. Job Description Overview The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a wide variety of journeyman level mechanical repairs and maintenance services on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment to maintain equipment in operational readiness.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment involving diesel engines and/or hydraulic systems.
  • Must have a Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Must have a Texas Vehicle Inspection License.
  • Must be able to obtain Texas A or B Commercial Driver's License during the probationary period or as required.
  • Must be able to obtain EPA Section 609 (recovery of automotive refrigerants) License during the probationary period or as required.
  • Must be able to obtain Air Brakes Coursework or ASE exam T-4 during the probationary period or as required.
  • Must be able to obtain Truck Steering and Suspension Coursework or ASE exam T-5 during the probationary period or as required.
  • Must be able to lift up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of materials, tools, and principles used in the repair of heavy construction, landfill, or emergency fire equipment.
  • Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Knowledge of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools used in automotive repair.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the materials, tools, and principles used in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Skill in repairing hydraulic controls and electrical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and plan the repair of a wide variety of mechanical problems in gasoline and diesel-powered automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand automotive and mechanical repair manuals used in the repair of automotive heavy machinery.
  • Ability to instruct and lead entry-level automotive equipment mechanics.
  • Ability to use discretion in choosing proper tools and materials to perform repairs.
  • Ability to plan work, delegate assignments, and provide training to crews.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Knowledge and ability to quickly identify hazardous materials when assigned to landfill operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, tools, and principles used in the repair of heavy construction and/or landfill.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance and diagnoses on malfunctions of heavy equipment using electronic or mechanical testing equipment and performs repairs for restoring operational readiness of heavy equipment; performs maintenance and repair of heavy equipment including parts of excavating, forklifting, earthmoving operators, skid-steering loaders, compactors, graders, and other systems to ensure safe and operational condition.
  • Uses welding equipment to repair or fabricate items for heavy equipment, tools, signs, and other equipment; drives a heavy equipment truck to retrieve or repair broken equipment or vehicle in the field.
  • Removes, disassembles, rebuilds, repairs, assembles, and installs units such as transmissions, engines, differentials, hydraulic control units, pumps, seals, hoses, clutches, and brakes on heavy equipment using power hoists and other tools.
  • Tunes and adjusts parts and settings to enhance the performance of equipment; troubleshoots electrical systems using schematics to perform repairs as needed.
  • Drives heavy trucks and trailer rigs to transport earth moving or other medium to large sized heavy automotive equipment to job sites; adheres to all safety and equipment standards.
  • Documents and tracks daily labor completed and work orders addressed; monitors inventory of parts and equipment and places orders when necessary or required.
  • Trains and serves as lead worker for lower-level mechanics to ensure maintenance and repair of city vehicles are performed according to safety and quality guidelines; demonstrates skill and expertise for handling large heavy equipment.
  • Performs state mandated inspections to ensures appropriate work is completed.
  • Performs other work as required or assigned.
  • Availability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays.
