About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing heavy-duty vehicles and equipment used in waste collection and processing operations. This includes compactors, loaders, dozers, excavators, roll-off trucks, and other waste-handling machinery. The mechanic ensures that all equipment operates safely and efficiently to support uninterrupted operations and compliance with company standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school certification in heavy equipment or diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic (preferably in waste, construction, or industrial environments).
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulics, diesel engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.
  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred but not required).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software and tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic computer literacy for maintenance tracking systems.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE or OEM certifications a plus.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and services on heavy equipment according to company schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Diagnose and Repair Equipment: Identify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and repair equipment to OEM standards.
  • Test and Verify Repairs: Safely operate equipment to confirm that issues are resolved and performance meets required specifications.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Document repairs, maintenance activities, and parts used in the company’s maintenance management system.
  • Repair and Replace Components: Service engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, and other key components.
  • Ensure Safety Compliance: Follow all company safety procedures, lockout/tagout practices, and PPE requirements at all times.
  • Assist with Fabrication and Upgrades: Support installation of new components or modifications to improve performance and reliability.
  • Support Field Operations: Perform maintenance and repairs both in the shop and in the field when equipment issues occur on route or at company sites.
