About The Position

As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Shift Supervisor, you will control work operations and supervise maintenance of heavy equipment used at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and the Dulles Toll Road (DTR). Heavy Equipment Mechanic Shift Supervisor Serves in the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Division in the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Through a team of Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Servicers, and Heavy Equipment Mechanics (Electrical), supervises the maintenance and repair of assigned equipment used at IAD and the Dulles Toll Road (DTR), including Mobile Lounges, Jet Bridges, public safety vehicles, shop vehicles, and the Dulles Toll Road fleet. Performs related duties.

Requirements

  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy mobile gasoline and diesel fueled equipment.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and ability to manage the operations and programs of the unit/team.
  • Knowledge of heavy industrial, commercial, and light automotive equipment to supervise Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanics.
  • Skill at the journey level as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic exhibiting the mechanical knowledge in order to maintain, troubleshoot and repair heavy mobile equipment.
  • Skill in using tools and interpreting technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, parts catalogues and similar guides.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory, the National Electric Code and the electronic principles used with various electronic/electrical controls on heavy equipment to evaluate the efficiency of substitutions or replacements and to ensure accepted trade practices are followed.
  • Knowledge of the principles and operating characteristics of heating and air conditioning units in mobile equipment to ensure proper diagnosis and remedy of problems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safety rules, regulations, and procedures to supervise others in working safely.
  • Ability to analyze data and information.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time and attendance systems.
  • A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • A state driver’s license in good standing.
  • Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL) within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor, and Planner Scheduler in the planning and scheduling of all heavy equipment preventive maintenance and mid- and long-term maintenance and repair projects.
  • Ensures sufficient quality and quantity of materials and equipment for upcoming projects.
  • Establishes deadlines and priorities based on work schedules, work order designation, safety hazards, operational importance, emergencies, methods, and established policies.
  • Determines the number and types of employees, materials, and equipment to perform work.
  • Monitors subordinate employee’s performance and conducts formal planning, mentoring, counseling, and performance evaluation sessions in accordance with established guidelines and goals and measures.
  • Tracks time and attendance of subordinate employees and approves timecards in the Authority’s timekeeping system.
  • Creates, issues, and reviews work orders in the Authority’s computerized maintenance management system for completeness and accuracy of labor and parts postings.
  • Prepares a shift report summarizing all work performed and notable occurrences that transpired throughout the shift.
  • Prepares and submits accident and injury reports in accordance with Airports Authority procedures.
  • Prepares itemized estimates for repairs; requisitions and requests purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Finds replacements for employees by holding over employees or calling employees on the overtime list.
  • Conducts shift meetings and assigns work orders for repairs, special projects and recurring preventive maintenance activities.
  • Leads subordinate mechanics in troubleshooting unusual problems with equipment or vehicles being worked on in shop.
  • Performs routine inspections of on-going repairs and projects.
  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion for proper procedures, materials, and safety practices as well as accepted trade practices and to ensure completion within assigned time frames.
  • Ensures that rules on safety, conduct, and housekeeping are observed.
  • Supervises and assigns all snow operations performed by the Shop for the Dulles Access Highway Snow, Interior Roads Snow, and the Back Shop Maintenance Teams.
  • Conducts equipment maintenance on-the-job training for new employees.
  • May assist Mechanics in responding to emergencies and with complex diagnoses or repairs.
  • Uses tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic and wheel alignment machines and analyzers to test electrical or mechanical components and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
