About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III (Field Mechanic) position at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, troubleshooting, modifying, and repairing light and heavy trucks as well as specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment. This role ensures that the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition, adhering to the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation and CDOT. The position requires a journey-level mechanic with experience in heavy diesel equipment repair and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment.
  • Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level coursework in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must obtain a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Type A or B with air brakes within 6 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening including criminal records check and driving records checks.

  • Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation and A/C.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses equipment components for defects or malfunctions using test equipment including scan tools and diagnostic computers.
  • Visually inspects equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids.
  • Test drives vehicles and tests operation of equipment and components.
  • Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts.
  • Designs and fabricates parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations.
  • Sets up and installs new equipment according to CDOT specifications.
  • Maintains records and documentation on all assigned units, tracking equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Orders and procures parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional.
  • Prepares work orders in SAP and materials estimates.
  • Prioritizes safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public.
  • Maintains technical knowledge of safety procedures and guidance materials.
  • Attends safety training and participates in tailgate safety talks.
  • Continuously learns and develops job knowledge and skills through training and on-the-job experience.
