About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance work necessary to maintain County Road and Bridge Department vehicles and equipment in good condition and respond to calls during off hours as required. These positions will also troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems as needed. The Mechanic levels are distinguished from one another by the independence of work, level of skills, education, and training required in each position. The position levels represent an internal career ladder and professional growth opportunity, and may be filled at either the level I, II, or III based upon the expertise of the applicant. Equipment Mechanic I: Works under close supervision and performs basic and routine mechanical work while gaining mastery. The Mechanic I is an entry-level position, designed to provide on-the-job training. Equipment Mechanic II: Works independently under minimal supervision and performs more technical maintenance and diagnostic services. The Mechanic II is a journey-level position.

Requirements

  • Mechanic I: High school diploma or equivalent, and trade-school level training in Heavy Equipment and Diesel Maintenance are preferred.
  • Mechanic II: In addition to level one requirements must have a minimum of two years of applicable experience.
  • Mechanic I & II: Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A or B with appropriate endorsement within six (6) months of hire. Licenses must be kept current as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess the ability to lift and carry heavy machinery components, tools, and equipment, often exceeding 50 pounds, using proper lifting techniques and equipment.
  • Capable of bending, stooping, and kneeling to access, repair, or maintain various heavy equipment components and systems.
  • Proficient in handling a wide range of tools, precision instruments, and machinery parts, demonstrating dexterity and precision in diagnostics and repairs.
  • Must possess clear vision to inspect equipment, identify mechanical issues, read technical manuals, and perform intricate tasks on heavy machinery.
  • Able to stand for extended periods and move around heavy machinery, workshops, and worksites, which may include uneven terrain.
  • Capable of safely ascending and descending machinery access points, ladders, and maintenance platforms to reach various components.
  • Able to reach overhead, forward, and below waist level to access equipment, fixtures, and critical components.
  • Possess excellent hearing and auditory perception to identify and diagnose equipment malfunctions, communicate with colleagues, and operate machinery safely.
  • Ability to sit during brief breaks, complete maintenance reports, and operate diagnostic equipment or computer systems for equipment diagnostics.
  • Display precise fine motor skills when performing intricate repairs, conducting equipment diagnostics, and handling small components.
  • Maintain exceptional physical stamina to work in varying weather conditions, handle physically demanding tasks, and respond to equipment breakdowns efficiently.
  • Regular Full-Time position, 40 hours per week.
  • Required to travel throughout the County.
  • This position requires a pre-employment background check, which will include a Criminal Background Check, Employment Verification, and Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of these items.
  • This position requires a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
  • This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) which includes random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Maintenance & Diagnostics: Responsible for routine maintenance such as safety inspections, changing oil and filters, and replacing brakes.
  • Performs DOT inspections on equipment and vehicles.
  • Responsible for a wide variety of routine and complex heavy vehicle repair and maintenance according to level and ability.
  • Repair and maintenance may include gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic and brake systems, and other major equipment components, as necessary.
  • Complete a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment including excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders.
  • According to level and ability, responsible for fabricating, welding, and modifying parts and equipment.
  • Level III performs welding duties as a welder, operating welding equipment, cutting torch, grinder, drill press and related hand tools to fabricate equipment parts or repair parts as needed.
  • Drives all job-related vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Division/Department Support: May transport operators and parts in the field.
  • Maintains and submits equipment repair and maintenance records.
  • Orders parts and supplies for equipment in accordance with County purchasing and receiving procedures.
  • May assist in annual inventory of supplies and tools.
  • May train new staff as required based on experience level.
  • Other duties as assigned.
