About The Position

At Hi-Way Paving, we are general contractors in the construction field that specialize in significant amounts of concrete paving, storm drainage, and excavation on highways and airfields. We are seeking an experienced Heavy-Duty Trailer Technician & Fabricator to join our shop team. This role is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and fabricating heavy-duty trailers, shop equipment, and batch plant equipment. The ideal candidate is mechanically strong, fabrication-capable, safety-focused, and able to take a project from concept through completion. This position will be based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Ability to gain clearance for restricted/high-security zones (e.g., airport AOA, military bases).
  • Valid driver’s license, CDL preferred.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb, walk, kneel, squat, push, pull, and enter confined spaces.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to meet job-site safety and labor requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience repairing and maintaining heavy-duty trailers, shop equipment, and/or batch plant or industrial equipment
  • Strong welding and fabrication skills, including MIG welding (TIG a plus), with experience working in structural steel and aluminum
  • Ability to fabricate, modify, and install metal components accurately from concepts, sketches, or blueprints
  • Solid understanding of air brake systems, suspension systems, axles, and general mechanical troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including basic diagnostics and repairs
  • Ability to independently plan and execute fabrication or repair projects from start to finish
  • Experience operating forklifts or heavy equipment
  • DOT inspection certification preferred
  • Owns basic hand tools (specialty tools provided by the shop)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trailers, including flatbeds, lowboys, dump trailers, and other commercial units
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on shop equipment and batch plant equipment, including mechanical, structural, hydraulic, and air systems
  • Complete structural repairs and custom fabrication using MIG welding, cutting, fitting, and assembly techniques
  • Develop and translate concepts, sketches, and blueprints into fabricated components and fully functioning equipment
  • Plan fabrication steps and execute custom builds and repairs from start to finish
  • Repair or replace suspension systems, axles, brakes, air systems, landing gear, frames, and related components
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and safety inspections on trailers and plant equipment
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders
  • Operate shop tools and equipment safely and efficiently
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures
