The position involves heat treating a variety of steel parts and tools, requiring considerable ingenuity to prevent warping. The role includes calibrating instruments, packing carburized parts correctly, and selecting timing for the depth of case. Special attention must be given to electric furnaces to ensure correct heating and treatment timing. The operator will also select the proper quenching medium as determined by the Metallurgical Lab or supervision. Additionally, the position may involve operating hardness testing equipment and occasionally operating a cyanide pot. The operator may specialize in either steel or heat treatment. Responsibilities also include setting up and operating a Gleason Quenching Press, Lepel or other high-frequency welding or induction heating machines, starting and operating a Neutralene Generator, utilizing a nitrogen/methanol system, and checking for proper operating conditions.
