The position involves heat treating a variety of steel parts and tools, requiring considerable ingenuity to prevent warping. Responsibilities include calibrating instruments, correctly packing carburized parts, and selecting timing for depth of case. Special attention must be given to electric furnaces to ensure correct heating and treatment timing. The role also involves selecting the proper quenching medium as determined by the Metallurgical Lab or supervision, operating hardness testing equipment, and occasionally operating a cyanide pot. The position may be specialized in either steel or heat treatment. Additionally, the candidate will set up and operate a Gleason Quenching Press, Lepel or other high-frequency welding or induction heating machines, start and operate a Neutralene Generator, and utilize a nitrogen/methanol system while checking for proper operating conditions.
