About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator serves as a resource for unit nursing staff, allied health departments, medical staff, patients, and visitors by assisting with patient care coordination, providing information, giving direction, securing assistance and resources, and troubleshooting. This is done in a manner, which reflects the vision, mission, and philosophy of nursing and Park Nicollet Health Services. The Health Unit Coordinator is expected to provide exceptional customer service.

Requirements

  • Proven proficiency with a personal computer, printer, and multiple phone lines.
  • Ability to operate a photocopier, fax machine and utilize spreadsheets, word processing and email.

Nice To Haves

  • A High School graduate preferred.
  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator program preferred.
  • Previous customer service experience, medical terminology and keyboarding skills is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Customer Service Support: Answer telephone and direct calls. Orient and welcome patients, family members, staff, customers, and physicians. Answer patient call lights and relay information to the correct individual(s) as needed. Survey patients/significant others as assigned/appropriate related to customer service standards.
  • Processing Orders: Review electronic orders and follow-through as appropriate. Prioritize and transcribe non-COE orders as appropriate.
  • Patient Care Coordination: Coordinate patient 'events' as needed. May include tests, exams, x-rays, procedures, discharge appointments, transportation, appointments for inpatient and outpatient services. Contact and communicate with other departments as needed to meet patient needs and schedules, i.e., IV, RT, or Homecare. Arrange for consults as ordered. Enter patient charges as indicated.
  • Online Tools Support: Serve as a resource to unit staff as new technology, programs, and processes are introduced. i.e. the electronic medical record and updates to EPIC. Serve as a resource to clinicians and nursing staff for placement of electronic orders. Assist staff and clinicians with trouble shooting of computers as an adjunct to the Help Desk staff. Coordinate downtime procedures on the unit when necessary. Clean computer equipment.
  • Unit Operations Support: Assist the Charge Nurse and Scheduling/Staffing personnel to coordinate unit staffing on shift-by-shift basis. Partner with the charge nurse to monitor and communicate the status of bed openings and discharges to the charge nurse and to the administrative supervisor. Order office/patient education supplies/forms for established par level. Keep station and break out areas stocked. Discuss with Clinical Nursing Director ideas/suggestions for changes based on usage. Program HillRom locators every shift. Enter online maintenance requests with follow up of equipment and unit environmental concerns. Keep bulletin boards and other communication boards/books current.
