About the position

The incumbent works as a Health Technician primarily in the clinical laboratory as a phlebotomist, but also supports the laboratory with clerical, accessioning and processing, and other testing duties. The incumbent works directly for the Laboratory Manager, who reports to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services and Nurse Executive. The Laboratory service employs 10 employees.

Responsibilities

  • Perform ongoing patient care duties under the delegated authority of the supervising Laboratory Manager and/or higher-grade Technologist.
  • Communicate with the supervisor to provide collaborative, timely and appropriate patient care.
  • Answer incoming calls for Laboratory Services and relay accurate information or refer the caller to technical personnel.
  • Perform observation-based screening and collect patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel.
  • Function as a resource person and troubleshooter for clerks and medical staff in executing Vista order entry and results options.
  • Perform specimen collection on residential wards for new admissions, patients with mobility issues, and patients under quarantine status.
  • Perform blood drawing duties in a safe and courteous manner, ensuring patient comfort.
  • Adhere to safety, infection control, and standard precautions while drawing blood.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this job.

  • Designated and/or random drug testing may be required.
  • May serve a probationary period.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service, or a bachelor's degree with major study in subjects directly related to the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of experience performing phlebotomy in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • A phlebotomy training certificate from a nationally accredited program.
