About The Position

The employee is expected to perform as a Phlebotomist within the Phlebotomy section for Specialty Care at the Albany VA medical Center and is under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager. The incumbent will perform a wide variety of blood collection duties on patients both inpatient and outpatient as well as medical center employees that are consistent with phlebotomy. The Health Technician (Phlebotomy) performs many functions which include, but are not limited to the following tasks: Accessions specimens into computer system. Collects patient blood and/or urine specimens. Labels specimens appropriately. Answers questions relative to patient specimen. Instructs and assists patients. Performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care, and educating patients on pre-testing and post procedure activities. Functions as a resource person for other non-laboratory personnel on specimen collection requirements and patient preparation for any lab request. Recognizes emergent situations and take necessary action. Establishes priorities for emergent orders Verifies laboratory orders, clarifies unusual requests with initiating provider in writing and revising standard operating procedures relative to job performance. Maintains records for routine patient tests or laboratory transactions. Verifies identifiers such as patient identification, time of sample, type of test requested. Identifies unusual conditions and discrepancies, which may cause erroneous test results.
