About The Position

This position is at the Optometry Clinic, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island located in Beaufort, South Carolina. The clinic operates in a high-tempo military medical environment supporting recruit vision screening, urgent Active Duty care, and optical fabrication. Located on Port Royal Island, the city of Beaufort offers coastal views of some of the most popular beaches in South Carolina. The area offers historic charm, wildlife tours, and notable filming locations for major motion pictures. Beaufort is also less than one hour from Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

Requirements

  • US Citizens
  • one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes using equipment used in the optometric field (such as manual and automatic lensometry, non-contact tonometer, visual field machines, and other tools); perform basic eye testing procedures; use electronic records system to input data and maintain patient records.
  • A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Optometry.
  • A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Responsibilities

  • Receive patients medical record, and in processes each patient on the computer.
  • Perform visual fields with the automated Humphrey Visual Fields Analyzer.
  • Apply drops or ointments to the eye and patches as needed.
  • Fit and dispense ocular implements for active duty, retired and civil service personnel.
  • Perform routine performance and calibration checks on optometric equipment to insure normal operation.
  • Perform clerical administration and record keeping duties.
  • Open schedules and schedules patients for routine and follow-up appointments.
  • Record and maintain logs required within the optometry department, ensuring patient compliance when issuing eyewear.
  • Anticipate, maintain, and order supplies for the operation of the clinic.
  • Provide basic patient instruction regarding clinic procedures, use and care of issued eyewear, and follow-up processes, as directed by the provider.
  • Assist with recruit vision screening and Active Duty eye care by performing standardized pre-testing procedures in accordance with clinic protocols.
  • Support optometrists by preparing patients for examination, anticipating provider needs, and ensuring efficient patient flow in a high-tempo military optometry clinic
