About The Position

University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is currently seeking candidates for a Health Teacher position for the 2024-2025 school year. The mission of the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is to establish a culture that celebrates diversity and where all boys thrive academically and holistically. University Prep develops this culture through small classes, student empowerment, personalized attention from teachers and school staff, and a consistent focus on successful instructional outcomes. University Prep provides opportunities and experiences that balance the academic, social, physical, and creative development of young men. Consistent emphasis is placed on preparation for life after high school, a 100% graduation rate, and all students being college or workplace ready. University Prep has a strong operational team with student managers at each grade level who support student achievement through a disciplinary model that includes students' families. Administration provides all necessary instructional materials and support in a coaching model designed to build teacher confidence and competence. In-house professional development fosters teacher professional growth and is focused on increasing student achievement. Our graduating classes have exceeded a rate of 94% and all of our seniors have been accepted at 2 or 4 year colleges or training programs.

Requirements

  • NYS Certification in Health 7-12 preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of Health Science, and preferably Physical Education.
  • Strong team contributor who embraces professional risk-taking and values innovation.
  • Strong knowledge of best instructional practices, preferably in both health and physical education certification areas.
  • Background in creating and/or modifying curriculum.
  • Commitment to the idea of Health (and Physical Education) as a key piece of the development of the whole child.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.
  • Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Responsibilities

  • Help students learn subject matter and/or skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women.
  • Plan an instruction program that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • Create an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Evaluate the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose the learning abilities and disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance as needed.
  • Counsel with colleagues, students and parents on a regular basis and work cooperatively with staff, superiors and community.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop reasonable rules of behavior and procedure and maintain order in a fair and just manner.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend meetings as appropriate.
