The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. We use K12, inc. as our curriculum provider for the basis of instruction and teachers provide live instruction via the Engageli platform. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to log into the online school daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions. High School teachers carry a caseload of both content and homeroom students. They meet with content students throughout the week in their virtual classrooms to provide standards-based direct and targeted instruction that meets the needs of the students. Teachers support students in coursework, offer additional one-to-one support, and provide feedback and grade work within three days of submission. They build lasting relationships with their homeroom students through daily homeroom sessions, consistent outreach throughout the school year with direct contact on a monthly basis, monitor attendance, progress, and engagement, as well as providing interventions as needed to ensure students remain engaged and continue learning. We do our best to assign homeroom students locally, as teachers are required to plan and attend in person outings and events. All teachers communicate regularly with learning coaches and families via telephone, web conferencing, and email.
