About The Position

Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles. Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office. As a Health Sensing Intern, you will join the team responsible for the "heart" of the Oura Ring. The team is responsible for all sensing modalities related to health, including physiological and environmental data. You will be essential in bridging theoretical sensing research with physical hardware, focusing on designing, building, and validating next-generation sensor architectures. This opportunity will be hybrid in San Diego, CA or San Francisco,CA.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, MSE, Biomedical Engineering, or Physics, etc.
  • Biopotential Sensing, MEMS, or Optical Sensing: Strong theoretical and practical understanding of the above sensing modalities.
  • Proficiency with ESP32, Raspberry Pi/Pico, or Arduino ecosystems for quick-turn proof-of-concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with KiCad (preferred) or Altium for multi-layer PCB design with a focus on signal integrity.
  • Experience with 3D printing (SLA/FDM) and CAD (Fusion 360 or SolidWorks) for sensor housing and fixture design.
  • Strong Python skills for data analysis; familiarity with Git for collaborative hardware and software development.
  • A methodical approach to isolating hardware vs. physiological noise issues.
  • A mindset for identifying unique solutions in electrode materials or circuit topologies that can be protected as company trade secrets or patents.
  • Ability to work independently through ambiguity and rapidly iterate on early-stage concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Sensing Systems Design & Integration: Develop methods to integrate signals from various sensor modalities, including electrodes, optical, or MEMS devices.
  • Optical Sensing: Contribute to the prototyping and validation of optical sensor systems (e.g., PPG) for physiological monitoring.
  • Custom ASIC Design & Validation: Support the team's efforts in defining requirements and validating the performance of custom ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) solutions for high-performance, low-power sensing.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Design and assemble "sensor prototypes" using evaluation kits, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, or Arduino boards, to test new physiological interfaces in real-world conditions.
  • Full-Stack Hardware Design: Create custom PCBs in KiCad or Altium, focusing on low-noise analog front-ends (AFE) and shielding for micro-volt level signals.
  • Mechanical Integration: Design and 3D print custom enclosures and test fixtures to ensure precise electrode-to-skin coupling and ergonomic fit.
  • IP & Innovation: Document novel hardware architectures, electrode geometries, or shielding techniques. You will be encouraged to contribute to the company’s Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio through internal disclosures and patent filings.
  • Firmware & Data: Write low-level drivers to interface with sensors via I2C/SPI and manage hardware/software versioning using Git.
  • Mechanical Integration: Design and 3D print custom enclosures and test fixtures to ensure precise electrode-to-skin coupling and ergonomic fit.
