About The Position

The Health Physics Instructor 2 develops and delivers health physics instructional content at the technical level in a classroom and laboratory setting. Provides technical support to federal and state agencies in various aspects of radiological protection as directed by the Professional Training Programs (PTP) Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Health Physics or re­lated field and 2 to 4 years of job-related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience requiring similar knowledge, skills, abilities, and performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
  • Must have a background in radiation protection fundamentals.
  • Must be knowledgeable of radiation detection technology and theory.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in health physics.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in teaching.
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills are required.
  • Must have technical or scientific writing ability.
  • Must have good communications skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in operational health physics at Department of Energy (DOE) installations, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensed facilities or state radiation agencies is desired.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:
  • Decommissioning operations
  • Air and environmental monitoring programs
  • Radiological audits or inspections
  • Emergency response operations
  • Radioactive waste procedures
  • Hazardous materials shipping
  • Medical applications of radiation

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements health physics (HP) training for a large HP program.
  • Reviews and develops policies and procedures to include inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, radiological emergency procedures, etc.
  • Performs technical review of documents prepared by others covering a broad range of health physics topics.
  • Operates monitoring and sampling equipment. Assures that instrumentation is maintained and calibrated in accordance with program procedure. Evaluates and recommends new equipment as assigned.
