About The Position

This Health Physicist role supports radiation safety operations at Marshall Space Flight Center, where cutting-edge research and spaceflight programs demand the highest standards of safety, compliance, and technical excellence. General Description The Health Physicist is responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation programs at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), which includes its Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) materials license and use of radioactive material, ionizing-radiation producing equipment, and laser, UV, and RF systems. This role is multi-faceted and involves non-ionizing radiation safety program management, problem solving, consultation and technical support, conducting feasibility studies, database management, and supporting the Senior Health Physicist in managing the ionizing radiation safety program operations. The Health Physicist will work closely other occupational health personnel to support the overall health and safety program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Radiation Health Physics, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical or Biological Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or related technical fields.
  • Minimum of 2 years of technical experience in Health Physics and/or radiation safety.
  • Training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Radiation Safety, and Laser Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to create written reports, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication, including writing reports, e-mail correspondence, oral presentations, data compilation, manipulation, and basic computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office and Internet.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving personnel, customers, or others in a professional manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Radiation Health Physics, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical or Biological Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or related technical fields
  • Certified and/or eligible for certification as a Certified Laser Safety Officer, National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist, or Certified Health Physicist.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the MSFC Laser Safety Officer, Non-ionizing Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), and alternate RSO.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, inspections, and radiological surveys.
  • Maintain inventory of all radioisotopes and radiation (ionizing and nonionizing) producing equipment located at MSFC, as required by the NRC and other regulatory rules and regulations.
  • Perform radioactive source leak tests as required by the MSFC NRC radioactive materials license.
  • Provide support to the MSFC RSO regarding NRC materials license management to include helping develop required amendments, and interfacing with NRC inspectors and health physicists at the regional and national level and ensure MSFC compliance with NRC and NASA headquarter regulations.
  • Maintain MSFC procedures and instructions, submit updates, and ensure all users of radioactive material and radiation-producing (ionizing and nonionizing) devices are informed.
  • Coordinate and provide formal training sessions for MSFC personnel who work with radioactive material and/or radiation-producing devices and non-radiation workers, who require access to areas that store or use radioactive material and/or radiation producing equipment.
  • Serve as backup Executive Secretary for the MSFC Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Manage the portable radiation survey meter program including its inventory, calibration requirements, and coordinate repairs, if required.
  • Manage the non-ionizing radiation producing equipment inventory.
  • Assist the Senior Health Physicist in the performance of radiation shielding calculations of new or modified radiation laboratories or facilities.
  • Assist other occupational health personnel as required on special work assignments.
