About The Position

The position serves as the primary research support Health Physicist. Must have knowledge of and experience in reviewing human research protocols that include non-standard of care administration of radiation to humans, to include review of: regulatory status of investigational radiopharmaceuticals or sealed radioactive sources; internal dosimetry (including potential acute non-stochastic, long-term non-stochastic, and long-term stochastic risks); safety of the physical administration of the radiation; institutional needs for safe delivery of radiation (i.e., roles and equipment needs for nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, medical physicists, and operational radiation safety); and, appropriate informed consent language.  Under direction from the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), the Health Physicist also develops, maintains, and proposes revisions (to be approved by the Radiation Use Committee (RUC)) to procedures, policies, forms and SharePoint resources for researchers to understand the submission process and standards; serves as the primary contact for campus' Office of Human Research Protections, the Institutional Review Boards, and the Center for Clinical Research; provides support and guidance to researchers requiring RUC approval of their human research protocol; provides training, as needed to research-affiliated groups; and coordinates with operational radiation safety when novel radiotherapeutics will be introduced on-site.  The Health Physicist also develops, maintains and implements a radiation research audit program, to include a review of the principal investigators' compliance with the RUC's final approval memorandum, review of imaging data, review of written directives associated with human research, and review of adverse events for reportability.  Must have knowledge of the regulations and guidance promulgated by CDPH, FDA, NIH, and NRC regarding the human use of radioactive material, and human research protections. Interfaces routinely with the RUC Chair and RSO and prepares final approval memos for the RSO's signature.

Requirements

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Bachelor's degree in medical or health physics or related field, and/or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience working as a Health Physicist in a research environment and/or a medical environment.
  • Experience in reviewing human research protocols that include non-standard of care administration of radiation to humans
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to maintain an effective and cooperative relationship with staff, students, faculty, co-workers, public and regulatory agencies.
  • Knowledge of health physics and health physics applications including the elements of a radiation safety program and ALARA principles.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of state (CCR Title 17) and federal requirements regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines, ability to effectively apply this knowledge to make improvements and solve problems.
  • Ability to utilize survey meters and other portable equipment to assess and determine radiological conditions. Maintain and calibrate radiation survey meters.
  • Must exercise attention to detail in order to maintain records, documents, and files that must be kept with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and experience using Word, Excel, Power Point.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in medical or health physics or related field, and/or equivalent education and experience.
  • Over 3 years experience working as a Health Physicist, while having experienced human research protocol reviews. Experience as a medical Health Physicist.
  • Has extensive experience and education in human-research protocol review, including non-standard of care administration of radiation to humans.
  • Experience crafting consent language.
  • Experience exercising attention to detail in order to records, documents, and files must be kept with a high degree of accuracy, and knowing the regulation attached to recordkeeping.
  • Expert knowledge in creating, building, and implementing a radiation safety program with ALARA principles.
