About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Radiological Physics, responsible for the maintenance of radiation safety standards in all areas of the Hospital. conducts radiation surveys as required to assure that safety and quality assurance standards are satisfied; directs the operation of the radiation film badge monitoring service; orders, stores, and maintains records and radioisotopes used in radiation therapy; instructs students, nurses, and attending staff on matters relating to radiation safety.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Health or Radiological Physics or Bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience in medical radiation safety.
• Two (2) to three (3) years' experience in medical Radiation Safety.
• Certification by a Health Physics Board desirable.
• Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for overall surveillance of all health physics activities, including personnel and environmental monitoring.
• Responsible for consultation service to all departments of the Hospital on matters relating to radiation protection and safety.
• Keeps records of receipt, delivery and shipping of all radioactive materials entering or leaving Yale-New Haven Hospital.
• Monitors all devices capable of producing ionizing radiation from the standpoint of the safety of patients and Hospital personnel.
• Distributes and processes personnel monitoring equipment; maintains records of personnel exposure, notifies individuals and their supervisors of exposures approaching the maximum permissible amounts and recommends appropriate remedial actions.
• Instructs personnel in proper procedures for the use of radioactive materials.
• Coordinates the waste disposal program, including records of waste, storage, and disposal.
• Maintains a current inventory and performs leak tests on all sealed radioactive sources.
• Performs and coordinates radioactive-decontamination procedures in case of accidents involving radioactivity.
• Assists in radiopharmaceutical therapies to ensure safe administration of doses, adherence to isolation and decontamination requirements, and release of patients and facilities afterwards.
• Assists the chairman of the Radiation Safety Committee and any other committees that are concerned with the safe and efficacious use of ionizing radiations.
• Gives in-service lectures to those personnel working around or concerned about radiation or radioactive sources.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of developments in radiological physics, and introduces new developments into the Yale-New Haven Hospital.
