About The Position

Responsible for the overall function, safety, and success of the AGQ Health Center and camper and staff health and safety. Will work alongside other Health Staff to train and implement health-related best practices to support camper and staff health. First responder in case of emergency. Guide program staff to maintain a safe environment and oversee first aid. Read camper health forms before the session and communicate with parents. Collect, organize and distribute camper medication. Coordinate camper health checks. Maintain meticulous records, adhering to all state and ACA standards. Maintain health center areas. Coordinate with the camp nurse, local doctor and hospital if further care is needed. Must be licensed MD, RN, PA, NP, EMT or WFR or equivalent. Supervise Assistant Health Officers.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or higher.
Must be State of Michigan Health Officer or hold similar qualifications.
Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR.
Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
Ability to interact with all age levels of campers.
Leadership ability and teamwork oriented
Possess a variety of skills and camping experience.
A commitment to working with a diverse staff and camper population for the fulfillment of YMCA goals.
Understand the development needs of youth.
Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
Demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas designated camp program areas.
Ability to live onsite.
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Physical ability to endure prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, stretching, walking long distances, hiking, climbing and running.
Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper and staff activities/programs.
Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Willingness to live in a camp setting, in shared living spaces with staff and campers and work irregular hours, delivering programs in the facilities available, with the equipment available.
Ability to operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions, and animals such as bugs, horses, etc.

Responsibilities

Provide healthcare to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.
Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
Screen all campers and staff who are arriving at camp and departing from camp.
Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to State Licensing and ACA Standards.
Examines health forms and notifies counselors and other key stakeholders of children with specific needs, accommodations, or restrictions.
Coordinate trips to outside medical professionals, including printing health forms, obtaining credit cards, contacting parents and filing an incident report via the YMCA portal.
Inventory and order adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
Inventory staff medicine cabinet and order appropriate over the counter medications on a regular basis.
Sets up and maintains equipment and cleanliness related to the Health Center, including deep cleaning and restocking inventory.
Responsible for opening and closing the Health Center and ensuring cleanliness during the summer.
Implement a thorough communication process to ensure best practices for parent communication.
Follow up with caregivers regarding camper health updates.
Return phone calls, messages, and caregiver inquiries as necessary.
Lead staff week training session reviewing basic health practices and Health Center operations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
