About The Position

The Health Information Specialist coordinates the activities of Medical Records for Health Services’ for Snake River Correctional Institution. This includes the compilation, processing and maintenance of medical records for adults in custody (AIC) medical charts after release from DOC custody. You will act as a liaison for physicians or other medical personnel needing or providing medical records pertaining to the AIC population. This position is responsible for records retention, archival, and response to public records requests. These activities must meet all the requirements set forth by administrative rules, federal and state laws pertaining to medical information and confidentiality. The Health Information Specialist serves as custodian of all AIC medical records maintained by the Health Services Division. Prepare and maintain patient records either by establishing new records, filing loose documents, reviewing charts after appointments for deficiencies and pulling charts as necessary. Maintain a tracking and recall system to identify receipt and dissemination of medical records. Organize movement of inactive medical records to storage; authorize destruction of outdated medical records per retention guidelines. Assist in developing and maintaining current written policies that govern: The release of patient information, based on state and federal statutes, and medical record professional practice standards The compilation, storage, dissemination, use and accessibility of patient records and monitor to enforce these policies The timely maintenance of patient records Respond to requests for patient records from former AICs, community and disability services providers, and others for continuity of care. Track records requests in database ensuring compliance of the retention schedule for all records requests, requesting party, types of information supplied, types of information redacted from the files, if applicable, reason for the redaction and laws restricting the release of the information, cost of supplying information, and date of completion.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience related to the class concept; OR
  • An Associate's degree in Health Information Technology from an accredited program; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
