San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) envisions a future where health justice is achieved for all people living with or at risk for HIV. Our mission is to promote health, wellness, and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV through sexual health and substance use services, advocacy, and partnership. We need passionate advocates for social change that embody our five key values: Justice, Dignity, Courage, Leadership, and Excellence. What is the position? Health Educators are the face of SFAF’s Syringe Access and Health Services program, and their work helps build relationships with participants while providing lifesaving services. They provide interventions to improve health outcomes for People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) including decreasing accidental death due to overdose, reducing HIV/STI/HCV infection rates, improving engagement in care, and linkage to treatment for Substance Use Disorder. Our mobile and stationary sites provide syringe access and disposal, overdose prevention education and naloxone distribution, basic medical care, and other community and health improvement-focused services.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of experience working with people who use drugs, people experiencing homeless, and highly marginalized communities.
  • Experience using motivational interviewing and a strong understanding of harm reduction practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of substance use and health concerns of injection drug users and health and social services in San Francisco
  • Comfortable speaking candidly and knowledgeably about drug use and sexual risk.
  • Ability to implement de-escalation techniques, follow safety protocols, and use sound judgement in making decisions.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and other common programs.
  • Proof of valid California driver’s license with excellent driving record required.

Responsibilities

  • Providing on site referral and linkage to substance use disorder treatment, medical care, HIV, HCV and STI testing, and other health and social services.
  • Creating warm and welcoming environments for participants with an emphasis on excellent customer service and compassionate care.
  • Provide on-site health education at both mobile sites and 940 Howard that focuses on overdose prevention, HIV and HCV prevention, and other health improvement activities.
  • Provide de-escalation, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention.
  • Data coordination and collection as well as supply and resource management.
