About The Position

Cumberland Plateau Health District seeks to fill a Health Educator role that will be based at the Dickenson County Health Department located in Clintwood, Virginia. The Health Educator will focus on workforce development and employee engagement initiatives to support a strong and effective public health workforce within the Cumberland Plateau Health District. This position plans, implements, and evaluates training, professional development, and engagement initiatives designed to strengthen employee skills, promote continuous learning, and enhance workplace culture across the health district. The Health Educator collaborates with program managers, leadership, and staff to identify workforce needs, identify training opportunities, and develop strategies that foster employee well-being, retention, and organizational effectiveness. Through data-informed approaches and best practices in workforce development, this role helps ensure staff are equipped, supported, and motivated to deliver high-quality public health services to the community. The Goal of the Virginia Department of Health is to become the healthiest state in the nation. This position will support the VDH Goal of becoming the healthiest state in the nation by continuing to support and improve the health of all Virginians through efficient and effective execution of operations and delivery of services, performing work based on assigned duties and performance measures. Purpose of Position: Provides educational services for a portion of a district in support of one or more programs. Characteristic activities: trains, educates, and provides information to the public and staff on health educational programs; prepares news releases; reviews, develops, and orders educational materials. As a direct contact to the public and clients on sensitive health issues, may respond to calls received and make appropriate referrals as needed. Provides requested information, and may serve to address emotional, technical, or social resources to callers. Works with considerable independence and demonstrates a wide array of communication and social skills in dealing with a diverse population. This is a restricted position which is solely funded by the PHIG (Public Health Infrastructure) Grant for a 1 year period ending January 31st each year. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant or non-grant funds.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of common community health problems; public/private health care practices; community organizing, survey methods and use of data and health education principles
  • Skills in program planning, implementations and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; public speaking; managing group dynamics and providing consultation with other professionals and the general public
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; utilize excellent interpersonal skills; maintain good working relationships; work independently with minimal supervision; execute problem solving skills; make appropriate decisions and develop program goals and objectives; evaluate program outcomes, impacts and processes

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with computers and Microsoft Office software preferred
  • Bilingual preferred
