About The Position

The Health Educator (HE) works with provider teams, other Neighborcare Health staff, and community partners to prevent unintended pregnancy, improve sexual health outcomes for patients and expand Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) knowledge and use in high schools where Neighborcare Health provides school-based health services. Activities include providing contraceptive counseling, facilitating classes on sexual health education, dispensing Narcan and Emergency Contraception, developing and maintaining school partnerships, and identifying and updating patient education and training materials. The HE works in partnership and joint accountability with other team members to achieve Neighborcare Health's Mission, Guiding Principles and Goals.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of the sexual health services available throughout Neighborcare Health.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Washington State confidentiality and consent regulations for adolescent health services.
  • Knowledge of cultural and social determinants of health, and specifically sexual health.
  • Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources, including insurance and Medicaid eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to listen actively and respond to patients, school staff, parents, and staff members in a timely, competent manner both verbally and non-verbally.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of our patients and clinics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide education and information to youth about all contraception options, including LARCs, and help increase awareness and access.
  • Partner with health teachers and other school staff to create and facilitate classroom lessons and workshops on a variety of sexual health topics (contraception, STIs, consent, healthy relationships, etc).
  • Develop high quality, scientifically accurate and inclusive health materials for youth.
  • Dispense Emergency Contraception and Narcan to patients; provide appropriate education on contraception and substance use.
  • Plan, facilitate, and deliver inclusive sexual health promotion activities for students, including those who have experienced migration, trauma, poverty, or other barriers for accessing health services.
  • Screen for health & behavior risk factors that contribute to early pregnancy, STIs, and unreliable contraceptive use.
  • Refer patients to clinicians as necessary for additional contraception counseling and to implement their desired contraception method.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge of sexual health and contraceptive options, optimize adolescent and adult learning skills, and actively address opportunities for improvement.
  • Help support other student educational needs as determined by SBHC programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
