About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Health Equitable Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration and Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Medical Officer. Reporting to the Bronx Family Wellness Suite Manager and working in partnership with other perinatal health programs out of CHECW and other BNH programs that address the social determinants of perinatal health, the Bronx Health Education Associate will be primarily responsible for managing and expanding the health education programming for the Bronx FWS.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Open to flexible work hours, including some work in the evenings and/or on weekends.
  • Hold certification as a Certified Lactation Consultant or have interest in pursuing this certification.
  • Bilingual (Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • With support of the FWS manager and the broader FWS Health Education team, develop comprehensive portfolio of health education programming. This includes the creation and facilitation of original content as well as the facilitation of programming delivered through contracted vendors.
  • Recruit and vet prospective speakers/vendors for educational series or special events.
  • Tailor workshops and classes to meet the language and other cultural needs of community residents on the maternal health subject matter. This includes managing translation requests for interpreters or translation of related documents.
  • Manage the promotion and recruitment of the health education programming for the FWS. This includes the management of electronic registration or presentation platforms as well as the development of flyers or communications requests for these.
  • Maintain the records of the health education portfolio of programming, including the management of attendance sheets, assessment tools, and other related forms.
  • Support the administrative needs of the health education programming portfolio.
  • With support of evaluation colleagues and FWS leadership, develop appropriate continuous quality improvement and/or evaluation tools for all health education programming and participate in their data analysis and regular reporting.
  • Lead in the creation and facilitation of health-promotion events for the community (e.g., Maternal Mental Health, Meet the Doula/Midwife, Black Maternal Health Week, Hypertension, Gestational Diabetes, etc.)
  • As a team player, support the promotion of other suite programming portfolios.
  • Support the suite with ensuring successful client intake, referrals to services, and management of appropriate client management software.
  • As a CLC, or soon to be CLC, provide support in increasing utilization of the FWS lactation room and other lactation clinic programming as necessary.
  • With the support of the rest of the FWS team, assist with the management of the FWS Advisory Board.
  • Support other Bronx FWS programming as well as larger FWS programming in the city as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and FWS leadership.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds
