About The Position

The Health District Microbiologist II will supervise technical personnel and conduct daily bacteriological tests on drinking, marine, surface, and wastewater samples as well as perform serological and PCR tests on clinical samples.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Public Health with at least 16 college semester credit hours of Biology from an accredited institution
Must have one (1) year experience to comply with TNI and CLIA standards as a Technical Supervisor
Minimum of three (3) years of related experience
FBI security clearance must be obtained within six (6) months
A valid driver's license is required. Successful out of state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Responsibilities

Supervise and train technical personnel to perform bacteriological and chemical analyst of fresh water, marine water, and wastewater samples by following standard methods, FDA or EPA procedures.
Serve as Technical Manager in the water quality program.
Assure compliance with the NELAC Institute (TNI) and EPA standards for drinking, surface, and wastewater testing.
Assure compliance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for bacteriological testing of marine water around shellfish harvest areas with the Department of State health Services (DSHS) in the Seafood Safety program.
Maintain compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) utilizing Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations for testing clinical specimens from clinic and hospital patients.
Assure compliance with the EPA and the Texas General Land Office (GLO) in the Beach Watch program for collecting and bacteriological testing of recreational marine water samples and post results on GLO website.
Maintain compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Select Agent Program as a Laboratory Response Network Laboratory (LRN) serving 12 counties.
Report any problems to appropriate local, state or federal agencies.
Must serve as Subject Matter Expert in infectious disease reporting and outbreaks to community and within the Health District.
Perform internal/external customer service by receiving samples, creating reports and disseminate information to clients.
Maintain laboratory equipment and accessories by performing routine/proper maintenance tasks as described by the manufacturer or more often as needed.
Train and maintain personal training as ICS Command and other first responder training and respond to public health emergencies when called.
May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
