About The Position

The Health and Safety Specialist supports the Risk & Safety Manager in the administration and coordination of resort-wide Employee Safety and Workers’ Compensation programs. This position plays a critical role in executing day-to-day safety operations, supporting injury response and return-to-work processes, and assisting with safety initiatives designed to reduce injuries and strengthen a culture of safety across the resort. The Specialist serves as a primary point of contact for employees regarding Workers’ Compensation claims, assisting with claim intake, documentation, communication with adjusters and medical providers, and coordination of modified and return-to-work assignments under the direction of the Health & Safety Manager. In addition, the Specialist assists the Health & Safety Manager with the planning, implementation, and support of safety initiatives, trainings, safety campaigns, and employee safety recognition programs. This includes helping coordinate Safety Month activities, safety committee efforts, near-miss reporting initiatives, and employee engagement related to safety performance and positive safety behaviors. At the direction of the Health & Safety Manager, the Specialist supports compliance with OSHA regulations and resort safety programs by assisting with audits, inspections, documentation, data tracking, and follow-up actions. The role requires close collaboration with Business Unit Managers and Supervisors to promote safe work practices and ensure consistent application of safety procedures across all departments. This position reports directly to the Health & Safety Manager, who reports to the Director of Safety and Security.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.

Requirements

  • Must demonstrate ability to work with employees from all levels of the organization, including Senior Leadership Team members.
  • Possess a willingness to partner and advocate for employees across the organization and build trust with departments around the resort as the in-house employee injury/Workers’ Compensation expert.
  • Computer familiarity with Excel, Word (or equivalent word processing ability), Power Point is necessary.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form in a clear, concise, professional and tactful manner with departments across the Resort.
  • Must demonstrate discretion and the ability to handle confidential medical, personnel, and claim-related information appropriately.
  • Must be able to ski or snowboard and an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: 2-5 years experience in risk management, insurance, health care, and/or emergency services industries required
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation process preferred.

  • Degree or education in Safety or Health related field a plus but not required.
  • Other Safety / Regulatory licensing, accredations, or certifications a plus but not required.
  • Ski industry or resort operations experience preferred.
  • Risk Management and/or Regulatory Compliance experience a plus but not required.
  • Experience working with, or familiarity with OSHA regulations a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary contact point for employees and managers in the employee injury and/or Workers’ Compensation processes.
  • Assists in coordinating prompt and appropriate medical treatment for injured employees in accordance with established Workers’ Compensation procedures.
  • Coordinates and supports administrative and legal requirements related to Workers’ Compensation claims.
  • Regularly updates the Health & Safety Manager and Safety & Security Director on active and closed claims, trends, and any potential exposure or litigation concerns.
  • Presents and serves as backup for facilitation of regular Safety Committee meetings.
  • Assists in the design and direction of programs to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposures to long-term health hazards.
  • Assists with identifying risk management, safety and compliance issues.
  • Provides input and recommendations related to workplace and guest safety initiatives; assists with the coordination and promotion of safety campaigns such as Skier Safety Month, Spring Break safety initiatives, and other resort-wide safety efforts.
  • Supports OSHA compliance efforts by assisting with documentation, audits, inspections, and tracking of corrective actions
  • In conjunction with Health and Safety Manager, analyzes safety-training data and compliance results to Business Units, and senior leadership – provides recommendations for effective training topics and tactics.
  • Maintains an understanding of OSHA regulations, compliance, other applicable industry, legal and regulatory safety requirements, and how/which regulations affect the resort.
  • Provides and assists with education and training for Business Units and resort personnel to understand their responsibilities relating to OSHA compliance.
  • Coordinates with Business Units to identify trends in workplace incidents, accidents, injuries and illnesses.
  • Communicates these trends and identifies solutions towards prevention.
  • Works with Business Units on Job Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment for job descriptions and job responsibilities.
  • Works with Special Events managers/coordinators to ensure consideration of elements of safety in planning and execution of events.
  • Works with insurance, safety and risk management teams at other Alterra resorts to coordinate and exchange “best practices” and/or other corporate initiatives.
  • Works with in-house Legal Counsel and other departments to ensure that contractors adhere to OSHA regulations and safety compliance while working at this resort.
  • Participates in Job Hazard Analysis and risk assessments in coordination with the Human Resources Department for Business Units, departments, and other staff.
