About The Position

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is one of the largest organizations of its kind committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with other public agencies and not-for-profit partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness and assist New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing. DHS is responsible for management of over 200 facilities, which mainly are individual and family shelters used as overnight residences for over 38,000 adults and children. DHS's portfolio covers approximately 4M square feet. The selected candidate will be working in the Health and Safety office and be responsible for coordinating, supporting and advising on all health and safety matters affecting DHS staff. The Health and Safety Analyst will monitor standards, process and communications in regards to health and safety and ensure Federal, state and local regulations within the workplace are adhered.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college in business or public administration, economics, labor or industrial relations, statistics, industrial psychology or a closely related social science field and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience in labor research and analysis, employee benefit design and benefit program evaluation, compensation analysis, labor economics, economic planning, or a related area; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of professional experience as described in '1' above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including PESH/OSHA.
  • Intermediate to advance knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Detailed oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to grievances regarding violations surrounding the Health & Safety of DHS staff in the workplace.
  • Work to address City, State and Federal employee Health & Safety violations.
  • Evaluate established research programs, recommend changes in existing programs when indicated, and develops recommendations for new programs.
  • Participate in the planning and formulation of agency policies and procedures relevant to its research program.
  • Liaise with external health and safety consultants and advisers in the provision of proper training programs and health and safety services within the workplace.
  • Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety, and welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the agency.
  • Complete annual PESH mandated forms detailing all injuries and illness of DHS employees for all DHS directed sites.
  • Participate in Health and Safety related meetings and walkthroughs.
  • Collaborate with other programs to ensure mandated staff trainings up to date and completed by DHS staff.
  • Assist the Health & Safety Officer as needed. Take action in the absence of the Health & Safety Officer.
  • May supervise or train subordinate professional employees and other staff.
