JDE: 600.A Head Varsity Coach Purpose Statement Head coaches are responsible for the organization, development, and leadership of a varsity athletic program in support of the mission and core values of the Ankeny Community School District. Duties may include coordinating practice planning, skill development, and designing strategies which prepare the team for competition; mentoring student-athletes; organizing camps; budget management; collaborates with other varsity coaches; and demonstrates adherence to district, conference, and state association rules and regulations. Job Title: Head Varsity Coach Reports To : Director of Athletics/Activities Wage/Hour Status : Exempt (Stipend) Minimum Qualifications : Valid coaching license through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the season. Previous experience as a head coach, preferred. Previous experience coaching, preferred. Strong knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, and supervise students athletes and a coaching staff. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm. Proficient in organization, communication, and interpersonal skills. Essential Functions Game & Practice Management Attend and effectively coach in all scheduled games, as determined by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and/or Iowa Girls High School Association (IGHSAU). Lead, organize, and be present at all practices. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate student athletic abilities on an ongoing basis (i.e., statistics, film, challenge matches, etc.). Accompany and supervise students at all athletic competitions. Coaching Philosophy & Athlete Development Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught to student-athletes, promoting individual and team growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and sportsmanship. Train and inform staff on coaching philosophy, skills, and techniques through staff meetings, clinics, and training. Ensure all coaches work together toward a common goal within their respective programs and provide unity with feeder schools and affiliated youth leagues within Ankeny CSD. Collaborate with and utilize the district’s strength and conditioning program. Adhere to injury prevention procedures established by Ankeny CSD. Staff Leadership & Development Delegate and assign specific duties to coaching staff, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness at season’s end. Make recommendations to the athletic director and principal regarding the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches. Direct, supervise, and regularly evaluate the performance of all assistant coaches. Sportsmanship, Student Conduct & Eligibility Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, ensuring sportsmanship in all phases of competition. Work collaboratively to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and indirectly, by working with administration, cheerleaders, pep clubs, boosters, etc. Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for participation. Advise students and parents on the athletic code of conduct, including consequences for violations, and coordinate with the Activities Director on possible infractions. Program Coordination & Administration Work collaboratively with the Activities Department to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements. Promote the athletic program to increase interest and participation. Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment within the program. Maintain all required student-athlete personal and medical records as directed by the Activities Department. Take precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities. Annually establish and meet performance goals. Policy & Compliance Be familiar with and adhere to the Coaches Handbook, Employee Handbook, Board of Educational Examiners Professional Code of Ethics and Conduct, and board policies, including those governing student non-discrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent regulations. Other Functions Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as assigned. Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision. Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality. Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors. Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program. Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies. Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations. Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others. Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution. Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
