Woodberry Forest School is seeking a head varsity track coach to lead the indoor and outdoor programs for the 2026-27 school year. As a member of the Virginia Prep League, Woodberry has a rich academic and athletic tradition and is deeply committed to helping our boys develop into leaders in service to others dating back to the school’s founding in 1889. We are seeking a coach who will facilitate our continued pursuit of excellence in track and academics. Academics and athletics combine with the arts, outdoor programming, and residential life, fulfilling the “whole boy” experience we cherish. In that vein, the head track coach plays a vital role in the intentional character development of each boy while establishing a highly competitive, positive, and inclusive culture for the track program. The head coach will build within the program, and demonstrate in his own actions, the qualities embodied by the vision and mission of Woodberry Forest School. Specific characteristics, duties and responsibilities: Is a positive leader of the entire track program developing a plan to integrate fundamental teaching for boys at all levels. While Woodberry formally only competes at the varsity level, the track team is a space for boys from novice through highly successful to grow. The coach will build boys up emotionally, physically, and socially. Encourages a sense of belonging for all boys who are a part of the program through building relationships with and among the boys. Understands the academic responsibilities of the boys and follows their progress as students. Uses each opportunity to teach values and character to the boys. Values a sense of team and builds the same value among the boys. No one athlete is more valuable than the other. Has a deep understanding of all events of track and field and can organize and plan practices accordingly. Defines assistant coach responsibilities in event coaching, meet organization, pre and post season planning Values strength & conditioning, nutrition and playing multiple sports in helping the boys to realize their full potential as athletes. Can work collaboratively with Woodberry athletic training staff in support of student prevention and recovery from injuries Maintain and organize all track equipment with the support of Woodberry staff Work alongside the athletic director to budget each season for operational needs and for long term planning and purchases Work with the Woodbery athletic staff to plan equipment set up and take down for each season and each event Builds relationships with member schools in our league. Is seen as a leader among this group with respect to a collaborative effort to make the league stronger. Understands the VISAA and VPL policies and rules and supports the implementation of those policies and rules. Is expected to work in partnership with the admissions office to communicate to prospective students and families the values and ideals of the entire Woodberry community. Is capable of supporting athletes’ transitions to college, inclusive of establishing relationships with college and university programs in support of the recruiting process. Is a reflective learner desiring to continually grow and learn through various means of professional development. Will supervise assistant coaches in support of their professional development. Ability to travel with athletes to National events beyond the scope of the regular season and state championships
