About The Position

Under the Aquatics Director/Coordinator, the Head Swim Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe and engaging aquatics environment for our swimming lessons. In the absence of the Aquatics Director or Coordinator, the Head Swim Instructor will supervise staff, maintain swim lesson operations, assist in the administrative duties of the Aquatics Department, and teach swim lessons to ensure the safety and engagement of swimmers and families. Provide excellent customer service to members and participants by providing adequate instruction within National Program and YMCA of San Diego County Guidelines. Requirements

  • Highschool/GED
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a swim instructor
  • YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor Trainer Certification (must obtain within 12 months of hire)
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) Certification or American Red Cross WSI Certification (must obtain YSL within 6 months)
  • YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) Certification or American Red Cross WSI Certification (must obtain YSL within 6 months)
  • Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or Health & Safety Institute
  • Current O2 certification and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or Health & Safety Institute
  • Licensing, state law and our government funders are required that all staff (hybrid, remote, or onsite) within YMCA San Diego County are fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is required within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.
  • YMCA will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the San Diego County Fair Chance Ordinance and the California Fair Chance Act.
  • You do not need to disclose your criminal history or participate in a background check until a conditional job offer is made to you.
  • After making a conditional offer and running a background check, if the YMCA is concerned about conviction that is directly related to the job, you will be given the opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the conviction, provide mitigating evidence, or challenge the accuracy of the background report.

Responsibilities

  • Run in-service and onboarding training for swim instructors.
  • Run certification training for swim instructors following YMCA of the USA certification raining design.
  • Enforces safety rules and follows appropriate discipline guidelines.
  • Ensures that practice time is sufficient for all students to learn skills.
  • Recognizes and corrects improper strokes skills using positive feedback.
  • Administer First Aid and/or CPR as necessary
  • Report any hazards/problem to Aquatics Director /Coordinator when immediate actions cannot fix the problem.
  • Educates participants regarding rules and regulation of pool area.
  • Supervise Aquatic staff, in the absence of the Aquatics Director/Coordinator, to ensure all facility policies are being enforced and observed by staff.
  • Follows logical skill progressions and covers appropriate amount of information in time available.
  • Communicates effectively with students in a patient, friendly manner.
  • Ability to support aquatics in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Ability to lead a group of swim instructors through certification training as well as regular in-service training.
  • Ability to lead by example and be a role model through shadow-teaching and corrective feedback.
  • Ability to manage a pool deck during swim lessons and in the event of an emergency.
  • Proven change capacity and ability to adapt to changing situations and department needs
  • Other duties as assigned
