About The Position

Head Swim Instructors are responsible for the fulfillment of an efficient job in these areas: communicating with management and parents, maintaining a safe environment in the pool before, after, and during lessons, reporting any safety violations, and come prepared for lessons and ready to teach. Head swim instructors are responsible for mentoring and providing guidance to new instructors as well as assisting in the process of cleaning the pool and surrounding areas, before and after swim lessons. The position will assist the lesson supervisors with any special projects and will be expected to perform all essential functions as outlined below. The position is part-time, averaging less than 20 hours per week.

  • Be in good physical condition, be dependable, alert, enthusiastic, and be able to deal with people of all ages in a positive and tactful manner.
  • Candidate must have great customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be able to handle potentially stressful situations in dealing with children or patrons within the aquatics center.
  • Act in a mature, responsible way in all aspects of the job.
  • Accept constrictive criticism and/or supervision.
  • Must be punctual and dependable.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to different situations.
  • Must possess ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform required duties with initiative, good judgment, accuracy, persistence, creativity, integrity, tact, and courtesy.
  • Adhere to district policies concerning appropriate dress, behavior, etc.
  • Must possess good safety awareness and judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Set example and provide guidance to new instructors during their shadow/training experience.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage a class of more than 5 students.
  • Have mastery of at least 2 levels.
  • Determine when a student is ready for evaluation by supervisor for advancement.
  • Make materials available for instructors (kickboards, rings, etc) before and during classes, and aid in cleaning up the pool area before and after swim lessons.
  • Teach lessons/combine classes in cases of instructor’s absences.
  • Resolve conflicts between swim instructors, participants, and parents.
  • Work in a team atmosphere, as necessary, promoting positive and effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and external customers.
